Download this stock image: An old engraving of a large pneumatic caisson in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This complex version was used in the construction of bridge piers in Copenhagen, Denmark. It has separate chambers for working – the bottom one larger. A caisson is a watertight structure constructed for the excavation for the underwater foundations. In pneumatic caissons (or pressurised caissons) an airlock allows access to the chamber. Workers, sometimes (sandhogs) remove mud and rock debris (muck) from the workspace to the surface – here by large buckets on pulleys. - 2D8M6R2 from Alamy's library of millions of high resolution stock photos, illustrations and vectors.
