COURSE OVERVIEW
Healthcare supply chain management (HSCM) describes all the processes involved in the planning and management of all activities in sourcing and procurement of health commodities as well as the logistics management activities. An efficient logistics and supply chain management is required for healthcare facilities to have the ability to choose, always obtain and use the needed health commodities (commodity security).
This course provides a fundamental understanding of logistics and supply chain management. It introduces learners to the commodity security framework, the role of logistics in commodity security and universal health coverage. It also elaborates on sustainable healthcare supply chain practices, emerging trends, and healthcare supply chain transformations. It then discusses some key performance metrics as a measure of healthcare supply chain efficiency.
COURSE OBJECTIVE(S)
The objectives of this course are to:
- describe pharmaceutical commodities and their warehousing requirements;
- explain policies, practices, strategies, systems, and theories that underlie pharmaceutical commodities inventory management
- explain policies, practices, strategies, systems, and theories that underlie pharmaceutical warehouse management
- formulate strategic and operational decisions regarding warehouse operations
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On completion of the Healthcare Logistics and Supply Chain Management course the students should be able to:
- profile the healthcare industry and healthcare supply chains;
- identify and explain fundamental logistics and supply chain management concepts and their application to healthcare supply chains;
- describe the major supply chain transformations in the healthcare sector;
- identify and apply key performance metrics for healthcare supply chains;
- appreciate emerging trends in healthcare logistics and supply chains.
