COURSE OVERVIEW
Health economics play an important role in making health systems more effective, efficient, and equitable. This course provides the foundations for participants to understand better health economics and its potential contribution to decision-making in the health sector. In every country in the world (and in many sub-national structures such as states and provinces), health economics plays, or should play, an important role in critical policy and operational decisions.
This course will equip the students with the appropriate skills to be able to evaluate programs and policies and be able to deal with issues of resource allocation.
COURSE OBJECTIVE(S)
The objectives of this course are to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main functions of health systems, trends in health policy reforms, and key challenges facing health systems of low- and middle-income countries today.
- Introduce students to economic concepts and tools that have direct managerial applications.
- Introduce students to the supply and demand of healthcare commodities
- Expose to students the skills of analyzing cost-benefit in the healthcare industry
- Discuss the cost-benefit evaluation of new and existing health commodities
- Enhance students’ analytical skills through the integration of their knowledge of economic theory with decision-making techniques
- Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the application of health economics in healthcare decision-making.
- Critically evaluate current research in health economics for healthcare decision-making.
- Apply a critical awareness of current issues in health economic evaluations.
- Implement health economic evaluations in clinical practice scenarios.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On completion of the pharmaceutical business regulations, ethics, and challenges course, the students should be able to:
- Understand how Applied Health Economics relates to healthcare decision-making.
- Advanced knowledge of Health Economics applied in the complex and unpredictable healthcare environment
- An ability to use health economics to optimize professional practice in a changing healthcare system
- An ability to critically evaluate current research in Applied Health Economics for healthcare decision making
- Be an expert in independent learning using the exploration of knowledge and inquiry to underpin practice
- A demonstration of self-direction and creativity in tackling and solving specialty problems
- Ability to implement health economic evaluations in clinical practice scenarios
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the scope and delivery of health economics, including horizon scanning of potential new treatments for the wider population
