In October 2021, Nintendo launched its first OLED gaming console, the Nintendo Switch OLED. Eight months later, Nintendo announced it shipped over 5.8 million devices, as the Switch OLED is a popular device.According to new reports/rumors, Nintendo is working on its next-generation console that will replace the Switch and Switch OLED devices, which will utilize an LCD display. The display will be 8-inch in size (bigger than the 7-inch OLED used in the Switch OLED) and will be produced by Sharp. These are just rumors at this stage, we do not know anything official yet. This will be a disappointment if Nintendo switches back to LCD, and could be a setback for OLED makers. The mobile gaming console market is beginning to be a substantial market for OLED makers, especially for SDC that also produces the 7.4" panel used in the Steam Deck OLED device. The upcoming OLED Toolbox will provide more info on OLEDs for gaming consoles as part of its insights trends analysis. The Nintendo Switch OLED model is an upgrade to the original Switch with a 7-inch 1280x720 OLED display (produced by Samsung Display). The Nintendo Switch OLED model is now shipping globally for $349.
