Description
COURSE OVERVIEW
Food security and sustainability connotes food accessibility and availability to all people with production systems that have minimal environmental impact without compromising the needs of the future generation.
Food security is a multidimensional concept that hinges on availability, access, utilization and stability. The course exposes students to the concepts of food security and sustainability and discusses how the growing world population, the nature and dynamics of the global food supply system, political and geo-political influences, agricultural and practices impact on the interrelationship between food security and sustainability.
Food insecurity does affect children, and may result in deficiency and malnutrition leaving them susceptible to various diseases. The availability of land and water resources for food production competes with feedstock growth for biofuel production as well as infrastructural development. Food insecurity in future will pose a serious global problem, with biodiversity and ecosystem imbalances and limiting human existence. Using improved practices to mitigate droughts, floods and deforestation along with improved technology for using fertilizers and pesticides will boost food production in a sustainable way without compromising the needs of the future generation.
